In talking about current and future improvements to Accuro, it’s important to remember the long road that got us here and the forces that have shaped us—and you—along the way. Because context, as they say, is everything.
When Accuro was developed in 2002, EMR technology was in its infancy. Accuro’s early adopters (a few hundred to start) were breaking new ground simply by moving their existing, paper-based data to digital form. As a result, their expectations of and demands on the technology were limited.
Within five years, Accuro launched eastward into Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. Our customer base grew exponentially, as did their expectations of what an EMR could and should do. That growth has continued to the present—now encompassing tens of thousands of users.
Our goal from the start was to provide a responsive solution that let you access all the information you needed, whenever you needed it, and we were able to do that for quite a while. But eventually we (and you) felt the effects of our intense and sustained growth. Long-standing Accuro users have accumulated more patients and more data every year; new Accuro users are always joining the pool; and the sheer volume of information being stored and organized in the EMR no longer makes it possible to deliver all information on demand without affecting performance.
Add to that the threat posed by cyber-criminals, which has loomed larger every year and evolves as quickly as technology does. While we’ve been trying to keep pace with our own growth and market changes, hackers are finding ever more creative ways to undermine digital security. So while we’re developing new features and increasing data capacity, we’re also working to defend against known threats and anticipate those not yet known.
The healthcare market has grown, technology—both beneficial and threatening—has advanced, but we’ve continued asking Accuro to do for 70,000 users what it used to do for 500.
We recognize that we haven’t met our objectives and as a result we’ve ended up being reactive as performance has fallen behind where it needs to be. But we’ve heard your concerns and we take them seriously. With the Accuro Performance Initiative, we’re making a course correction and focusing our attention as a company on getting Accuro to a state where it’s consistently responsive and will remain so, scaling with your growth into the future.
